SUBMARINE HULL CANISTER DAMASCUS

Some projects carry a deeper meaning than the steel itself. As a Navy nuclear submarine veteran, I wanted to preserve a piece of my time aboard the USS Maine that reflected the craftsmanship and history of the vessel. During an overhaul, I collected scrap machined shavings from the submarine’s hull and combined them with high-carbon powdered steel.

The material was then forged into blades, creating a unique and symbolic pattern that couldn’t be reproduced by any other process.

This was a personal project with a finite amount of material available, and once the supply was gone, the work naturally came to an end.

The photos in this carousel show the full journey—from raw shavings to finished blades—and serve as an archive of a project that meant a great deal to me.
